ATFirst™ Cardiac Troponin I Rapid Test (cTnI)

A qualitative lateral flow cassette for cardiac troponin I in whole blood, serum or plasma, used alongside ECG and laboratory testing.

First Diagnostic™ cardiac troponin I rapid test kit box

Intended use

Cardiac troponin I is a regulatory protein of heart muscle. It enters the bloodstream when heart muscle cells are injured. The ATFirst™ troponin I rapid test is a qualitative cassette that shows whether cTnI is detectable in the specimen at the level defined in the insert.

It is intended for healthcare professionals and supports clinical assessment of patients with suspected myocardial injury. It never replaces ECG or laboratory troponin testing under the local chest-pain protocol. First Diagnostic™ Corporation distributes it within its ATFirst™ rapid tests line.

How the test works

A test of this type uses two antibodies specific to cardiac troponin I. One is attached to colored particles; the other is fixed across the membrane at the test line. Troponin I in the specimen is held between the two, and color builds up at the test line. A control line confirms that the specimen has migrated.

Read the result only as the insert describes. See our guide to lateral flow tests for the general principle.

What to confirm in the insert

  • Which specimens and anticoagulants are accepted, and how soon a specimen must be tested
  • Sample volume and the read window
  • The detection level for cTnI
  • Storage conditions and shelf life
  • Interpretation, including faint lines and invalid results

All of these are defined by the insert supplied with each kit. Ask sales@firstdiagnostic.com for the current version; published inserts are on the product inserts page.

Limitations

  • Troponin rises over time after injury. A negative result soon after symptom onset does not exclude myocardial injury, and repeat laboratory testing follows the local protocol.
  • A visual qualitative test reports neither a concentration nor its change over time.
  • Troponin can also be raised in myocarditis, pulmonary embolism, sepsis and kidney disease.
  • Testing must not delay ECG, treatment or referral.
