ATFirst™ HIV 1-2-O Rapid Test – Tri-line Antibody Cassette

A qualitative lateral flow cassette for antibodies to HIV-1, including group O, and HIV-2 in whole blood, serum or plasma.

First Diagnostic™ HIV 1-2-O tri-line rapid test kit box

Intended use

The ATFirst™ HIV 1-2-O rapid test is a qualitative antibody test for professional in vitro diagnostic use. It detects antibodies to HIV-1, including group O, and to HIV-2, as an aid in the assessment of HIV infection. It is not an antigen test and does not detect the virus itself.

First Diagnostic™ Corporation distributes the cassette under the ATFirst™ brand to laboratories, clinics and health programs outside the United States, as part of its rapid tests catalog. A reactive result is preliminary and must be confirmed under the national HIV testing algorithm.

How the test works

The specimen travels along a membrane strip by capillary flow. HIV-specific antibodies, if present, bind to HIV antigens used as reagents on the strip and a colored line forms in the test region; a control line shows that the strip has run.

“Tri-line” describes the line layout of the cassette. What each line represents is defined in the insert, and results are read only as the insert directs. See lateral flow tests for the principle.

What to confirm in the insert

The insert supplied with each kit, not this page, defines how the test is run. Request the current version from sales@firstdiagnostic.com; inserts already published are on the product inserts page. Check in particular:

  • Specimen collection, accepted anticoagulants and handling
  • Sample volume and read window
  • Detection level, storage conditions and shelf life
  • The meaning of each line, and what makes a result invalid

Limitations

  • Antibody tests cannot detect infection in the window period before antibodies develop. A negative result does not exclude recent infection.
  • A reactive result requires supplementary testing before any diagnosis is communicated.
  • Infants born to mothers living with HIV can carry maternal antibodies, so antibody results in infants need separate assessment.
  • Results are qualitative and must be interpreted by a clinician with the history and other laboratory findings.
