STI rapid tests for clinics and laboratories

First Diagnostic™ Corporation supplies STI rapid tests for professional in vitro diagnostic use. The range has two antigen tests, for chlamydia and gonorrhea, and two antibody tests, for syphilis and herpes simplex virus (HSV).

These lateral flow tests are used where a result is wanted during the visit: sexual health clinics, antenatal services, hospital and district laboratories, and outreach programs with limited laboratory access. Each result is an aid to diagnosis and must be interpreted by a clinician with other clinical and laboratory findings.

Using results responsibly

  • Chlamydia and gonorrhea (antigen tests): a negative result can occur when antigen in the specimen is below the detection level, so it does not exclude infection. Antigen can be detected without living organisms and may persist after treatment, so a positive result cannot show whether therapy has worked.
  • Syphilis (treponemal antibody test): antibodies build gradually and may be missed in early primary infection. Once a person has had syphilis the antibody can remain indefinitely, so a positive result may reflect a past, treated infection.
  • HSV IgM: IgM serology is subject to cross-reactivity and persistence; a reactive result is not proof of recent infection.
