ATFirst™ HSV IgM Rapid Test (HSV 1/2)

Qualitative detection of IgM antibodies to herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 in serum or plasma, in lateral flow cassette format.

First Diagnostic™ HSV 1/2 IgM rapid test kit box

Intended use

The ATFirst™ HSV IgM rapid test detects IgM antibodies to herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 in serum or plasma. It is a qualitative test for healthcare professionals and supports clinical assessment; it does not establish a diagnosis on its own.

Herpes simplex infection is lifelong. After the first episode the virus stays dormant in nerve cells and can reactivate, with or without symptoms. That biology limits what an IgM result can say. First Diagnostic™ Corporation lists the cassette in both its STI rapid tests and prenatal categories of the rapid tests catalog.

How the test works

Serum or plasma is applied to the cassette and drawn along the membrane. HSV-specific IgM is detected by an immunological pairing typical of IgM tests: anti-human IgM on one side, HSV antigen on the other, with a colored label making the bound complex visible at the test line. A control line verifies the run.

Whether HSV-1 and HSV-2 are reported together or on separate lines is stated in the insert. For the format itself, see lateral flow tests.

What to confirm in the insert

  • Whether the two virus types share one test line
  • Specimen handling and sample volume
  • Read window
  • Detection level and any stated cross-reactivity
  • Storage conditions
  • Interpretation of reactive, negative and invalid results

Each of these is defined by the insert supplied with the kit, which sales@firstdiagnostic.com will send on request. Published inserts are on the product inserts page.

Limitations

  • IgM testing does not reliably separate HSV-1 from HSV-2, or a first episode from a recurrence, because IgM can reappear when the virus reactivates.
  • Type-specific IgG serology and direct detection of the virus from a lesion are the laboratory methods used for those questions.
  • A negative result does not exclude infection; antibody may not yet be detectable soon after exposure.
  • Other herpesviruses can cross-react in IgM assays.
  • Results in pregnancy need confirmation before they influence management.

Frequently asked questions

Check the insert for how the two types are reported. In general, IgM serology is not a dependable way to type herpes simplex infection.
