ATFirst™ HBV Combo Rapid Test – Five-Marker Hepatitis B Panel

Five hepatitis B serological markers read side by side on one qualitative lateral flow device, from serum or plasma.

First Diagnostic™ HBV hepatitis B combo rapid test kit box

Intended use

Hepatitis B serology rarely rests on a single marker. The ATFirst™ HBV combo rapid test places a five-marker hepatitis B panel on one device, so a professional user can view several markers from the same serum or plasma specimen. Results are qualitative and are an aid to clinical assessment.

Surface antigen, surface antibody, e antigen, e antibody and core antibody are the markers conventionally used to describe hepatitis B status. Confirm the markers on this panel in the insert. First Diagnostic™ Corporation distributes it within the ATFirst™ rapid tests range.

How the test works

Panels of this kind usually give each marker its own strip with its own test and control lines; confirm the layout in the insert. On panels of this kind, antigen markers are usually detected in a sandwich format, in which a line appears when the marker is present. Some antibody markers are commonly run in a competitive format, where the meaning of the line is reversed.

For that reason every strip is read only as the insert directs. See lateral flow tests for the principle.

What to confirm in the insert

Before the panel goes into routine use, check the insert that ships with every kit for: the five markers and their positions on the device; specimen handling and the sample volume for each well; the read window; the detection level of each marker; storage; and the interpretation table for marker combinations.

The current insert is available from sales@firstdiagnostic.com; published inserts are on the product inserts page.

Limitations

  • A qualitative panel gives no quantitative information such as antibody concentration or viral load.
  • A marker pattern on a visual panel does not by itself establish the phase of infection or immune status; a clinician interprets it with other findings.
  • Markers below the detection level of the device will not be seen, so a negative strip does not exclude hepatitis B.
  • Unexpected or clinically decisive patterns should be confirmed by laboratory immunoassay.
