ATFirst™ CMV IgM Rapid Test

A qualitative lateral flow cassette for IgM antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) in serum or plasma.

First Diagnostic™ CMV IgM rapid test kit box

Intended use

A CMV IgM rapid test looks for an antibody response to cytomegalovirus, a common herpesvirus. Infection is usually mild or silent in healthy people, and the virus then remains latent in the body for life. It matters most in pregnancy and in patients with weakened immunity.

The ATFirst™ cassette is qualitative and detects IgM antibodies to CMV in serum or plasma. Healthcare professionals use it as an aid to clinical assessment, together with laboratory serology. First Diagnostic™ Corporation supplies it under the ATFirst™ brand; the complete range is in the rapid tests catalog.

How the test works

CMV-specific IgM in the specimen is the target. In cassettes of this kind an anti-human IgM reagent and CMV antigen work as a pair, one fixed at the test line and one linked to colored particles, so that a line is designed to form when CMV-specific IgM bridges the two. The control line is independent of the result and shows that the strip has run. The insert gives the reading rules. General background: lateral flow tests.

What to confirm in the insert

Serology kits differ in their detail, and that detail sits in the insert supplied with each kit. Confirm there: specimen handling (including the use of stored or frozen specimens), sample volume, read window, detection level, storage and how results are interpreted.

The current insert is sent on request; write to sales@firstdiagnostic.com. Those already published are on the product inserts page.

Limitations

  • CMV IgM can appear in a first infection, in reactivation and in reinfection, and may stay detectable for a long time. A reactive result therefore cannot date the infection.
  • Laboratories establish timing with IgG results and IgG avidity testing, which this cassette does not provide.
  • Other herpesvirus infections and rheumatoid factor can produce false reactive IgM results.
  • Patients with weakened immunity may not produce detectable IgM.
  • The test does not assess infection in a newborn.

Frequently asked questions

Not necessarily. IgM also occurs with reactivation and can persist. Confirm with laboratory serology.

The catalog lists serum or plasma. The kit holds 20 tests (catalog number 85226400160); pack size is confirmed at quotation.
